1. Narrow to your state, then the work you need
Start from your state — California, Florida, Arizona — then filter by the service. There are 11 of them, from resurfacing and plaster through tile, decks and equipment. Counts beside each filter are the number of contractors that filter returns, not the site total.

2. Read the licence, not the adjectives
Every listing here starts as a public record from the board that issues the licence, which is why each one shows a licence number you can check yourself against the state register. A contractor who cannot produce that number for you is not one to take a deposit from.
3. Treat ratings as one input
Where a rating is shown it comes from Google, with the review count, the source and the date we read it. Ordering uses a weighted average, so 5.0 from three reviews does not outrank 4.8 from five hundred. The number displayed is always the real one; only the ordering accounts for how many people voted.
4. Get more than one quote, in writing
